    ugh, there are two stories for everything. I was told not to drain my electric heater in CA, sure enough it leaked through, but I got a long time out of it, but it clearly rusted through. The plumber who replaced suggested every year or two to do a 'power flush,' now you're saying to leave it. One youtuber suggested every 6 mos, now that is silly.

    I started to hear squeaky sound low pitch and continuous after flushing the toilet and when the tank was filled. Now I hear that in both of my toilets when turning off both hot and cold water. It does not sound like water hammer, what else can it be?

    I'm looking at a new kitchen faucet but will NOT be looking at Pfister. They pride themselves on their lifetime parts warranty, but the caveat is you have to have the original purchase receipt for the faucet or they refuse to help you get parts. I like the Pfister faucet I currently have, but it came with my condo... so no purchase receipt. Even when I clarified that I expected to pay for the replacement parts, they did not want to cooperate. Eventually they agreed to send the parts, but made a big stink about it being a one time occurrence. Now that my sprayer head is malfunctioning, I'm looking at replacing the whole faucet with some other brand.

    This is sort of related to the hot water heater. I have a well system and decided that perhaps the water pressure was low because the precharge in the tank was low. So, I drained all the water with the pump turned off and added a couple pounds to get it 2 psi less than cut on pressure of the pump. I found out later much to my chagrin that I should have closed the shut off valve to the house to keep all the water from draining out of the system. When I started things up again I noticed water pressure was not good. After thinking about it I figured that I have air trapped in the lines and absorbing the pressure that should be going to the taps. I tried to figure out a way to get the air out and thought I would have to drain everything again and start it up with all taps open to let the air escape. I didn't want to do that and I figured that the water heater was not going to drain so it could act as a big air trap full of bubbles. I contemplated draining the tank and didn't want to do it for all the reasons you stated. What I did was open every hot water tap including (this is most important I think) some basement taps that never get used. This seemed to make things better. I would like to see a show about the effects of air in the lines for well systems.

    My kitchen sink gets jammed up at the baffled tee. We don't have a dishwasher so I got rid of the baffled tee and just run it straight. Since I have to clean the pipes out and it's a pain I pay close attention to what goes down it, especially grease. My wife though thinks that it's too much trouble to get all the grease out of the pan and what the heck am I around for if not to do stuff like clean the pipes.

    Really interesting. In the UK we import them from Europe and we find them for £180 in the shop, to include the frame and cistern and all the workings, but without the toilet pan (ceramic part you sit on). So with a cheap pan you can get the whole lot for about £350 which based on what you are saying is a lot cheaper than in the US.

    Great video! I'm widow who lives alone, so I appreciate you guys putting my mind at ease about noises I might hear! My current issue is that occasionally I'm hearing a big bang after I flush my toilet. I did have a plumber out about a year ago and he tightened the brackets(?) along the pipes in my basement and installed an arrestor at the pipe that goes from my washer out to the main line. He explained about water hammer, so now I'm extremely nervous that that's what's happening with my toilet and that a pipe may burst in my basement. Do you have any other ideas about what it might be? As I said, it's just the toilet flushing and it doesn't happen every time. Thanks in advance!

      Uponor PEX A is the brand sold at my plumbing suppliers. The diameter of PEX A is the same size as copper pipe. You should size the water piping in your house based on how many plumbing fixtures you have. There is a sizing chart on the internet. For PEX A you need to purchase the expansion tool.

      @TheGrumpyPlumber 3 дня назад

      I’ve never encountered this problem. Is it electric? We tend to get that smell here in the U.S. with electric heaters and the anode rod usually causes that. Combination boiler and water heaters here in the U.S. are becoming more prevalent in states with warmer climates. These are gas however, not electric. Sorry, but I’m unable to help with your problem. You evidently are more advanced in your heating systems in the UK than we are here.

    I'm having a weird problem with the water heater here at my mom's house we just got an electrician out here because everytime we turn on the breaker for the hot water heater it trips the main breaker welp the electrician didn't find anything wrong electric wise.. we found out there's air in hot water heater and it's about half full? Is that fixable?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber 3 дня назад

      This is strange because you always need to have the water heater full of water before you turn the power on to the heater. If the water heater is only half full, when you open a hot water faucet, you wouldn’t get any water coming out, just air. Did someone turn the cold water supply off to the heater while it was filling up? You need to get a plumber that knows what he’s doing and he should be able to repair the heater.

    Got a question for you if you read this hot water heater just started today making a high-pitched sound and went out detected. The flame was on just got out of the shower. Never heard it before but just started and I’m wondering is it because the flame did shut off through it cycle is the noise went away. I’m wondering if that’s going to happen every time the flame comes back on to warm upor I have not checked the temperature setting it’s up to high and turn it down to 110 115. What’s your thoughts thanks.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber 3 дня назад

      Is this a new or older heater? If you have a 40 gallon water heater, for example, when you use 5-7 gallons of water, the burner will come on and start heating water. It will keep running until heater is back up to temperature after you stop using the water. The burner will not keep coming on and off as you use the heater. As far as the noise goes, you should probably have someone check it out. You may have a bad burner.

    High psi, thermal expansion can take out any pipe, fitting or fixture. I've seen a PEX pipe rupture down fitting to fitting nearly. Couple feet tear. Micro cracks are prone to certain PEX types if not all. The ruptures I've seen on copper have been less damaging. Unless someone doesn't know how to solder or didn't get enough pipe in the fitting then of course you'll have trouble. The iron, copper, PEX what do they all do to our systems. Home and body? How about stainless steel making it's way up? I mean we use it for water bottles right. Never know. Water content is important as well. Surrounding medium pipe might pass through in ground. Is your copper poly sleeved? Does your piping have insulation for cold temps? Do you have an expansion tank? Different water content will act differently to copper, galvanized, PEX etc. Same with if you have a gas/electric or tankless. They do different things when heating the water. Calcium and other crystals in the water will act differently as well.

      Are you on city or well water? Do you have a water softener? If you have a water softener, bypass it, drain the water heater and fill back up. See if that solves your problem. Disconnect the cold water feed from the water heater and run it into a bucket and see if water comes out clear. If there is a faucet right next to the water heater, you can check it there too. That will tell you if the water source is okay. Another thing to try is drain the heater, fill up only half way and drain again. These are things I would try if I was there working on your heater. I wouldn’t have changed the water piping.

      The larger the motor, the quieter the disposal runs. You probably get 3x more life out of a larger motor. Every time you turn on a 3/4 or larger garbage disposal, it rotates different directions. When you buy a smaller disposal, you’ll probably need to buy another one soon. The worst thing you could do, is NOT use the garbage disposal if you have one.

Anyways, after I snapped the power to the heater off and showered to use the hot water in the tank, to not waste money, I flushed it and now..magically..my noise is gone

    Hi Jim. My pipes whistle in my downstairs bathroom anytime water runs in the house. The whistling stops if I turn the water valve off below the toilet. Can you help me?

      You mean you turn off the water supply to the toilet? If it is, change the fill valve in the toilet tank. If you are on a pressure regulator, check your incoming pressure. Best spot to do that is on the drain of the water heater. There should be no more than 60 pounds of pressure on the house side of the pressure regulator.

    He's going to stop using that bottom drawer within 3 months. Why not just have the top smaller dishwasher?

      Bottom drawer of dishwasher is used when family comes and when we have company over for dinner which is more often than every three months. Most of the time we do just use the top drawer for just the two of us. Thanks for watching.
